Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Red Hat was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, with offices worldwide. It is closely linked with its enterprise operating system, Red Hat Enterprise Linux. After Intel, Red Hat is the second largest corporate contributor to Linux kernel version 4.14. IBM revealed its intention to purchase Red Hat for $34 billion in October 2018.

Bob Young founded the ACC Corporation in 1993, a catalog company that marketed Linux and Unix software peripherals. Marc Ewing established his own Linux distribution, Red Hat Linux, in 1994. Red Hat went public on August 11, 1999, with the eighth-largest first-day increase in Wall Street history. Since then, the business has purchased WireSpeed, C2Net, and Hell's Kitchen Systems. Red Hat announced the Red Hat Application Stack on September 18, 2006, which included JBoss technology and was validated by other well-known software suppliers.

Red Hat shares were transferred from the NASDAQ (RHAT) to the New York Stock Exchange (RHT). Red Hat purchased MetaMatrix in 2007 and entered into a distribution arrangement with Exadel. Red Hat replaced CIT Group in the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index on July 27, 2009. This was described as a significant milestone for Linux. Red Hat became the first billion-dollar open-source corporation, with yearly revenue of $1.13 billion during its fiscal year.

In 2015, Red Hat surpassed the $2 billion mark. The company's yearly sales were approximately $3 billion as of February 2018. Red Hat released the Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure (RHHI) 1.0 software solution in June 2017.

In October 2018, IBM revealed its intention to buy Red Hat for $34 billion. On May 3, 2019, the US Department of Justice completed its examination of IBM's planned Red Hat purchase. Red Hat provides subscriptions for support, training, and integration services that assist clients in using open-source software. Since January 20, 2010, Red Hat has published the web publication Opensource.com. The site analyzes how open-source ideology is applied in business, education, government, law, health, and life.

Red Hat Enterprise MRG is a clustering tool designed for high-performance computing integration. MRG stands for Messaging Realtime Grid. Red Hat is the most generous contributor to CEPH Storage. Block, File, and Object Storage in Red Hat Ceph Storage (SDS). Ceph's primary goal is completeness. Ceph's primary goal is to achieve entirely distributed operation with no single point of failure and scalability to the exabyte level.

The system is self-healing and self-managing to reduce administration time and other expenditures. Red Hat's Istio project intends to provide a control plane comparable to Kubernetes for cloud-based data center management. CloudForms manages VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, OpenStack, Amazon EC2, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, and Red Hat OpenShift virtual machines, instances, and containers. CoreOS is a defunct open-source lightweight operating system based on the Linux kernel that was supposed to support clustered deployments.
